Devon

I lay there with my body pressed firmly on the moist ground, pine needles digging into my fur. My sights were set on one thing. Not even the needles disturbingly numb against my rich black fur distracted me anymore. My sights were set on one thing: the doe grazing in the clearing, unaware of my predatory gaze.

I advanced slowly letting my mind embrace the beast; feeling my hackles rise in anticipation I smiled menacingly letting my canines come into full view. I wanted blood, I wanted this doe. My body leaned forward prepared to attack, focused on the point I needed to hit to kill the doe. I tensed as the ecstasy of the hunt prepared to overwhelm me.

The doe tensed just as I heard a human sound –a frightened scream. She immediately fled with the wind right on her heels. I sighed frustrated by this interruption. My lips curled back revealing my sharp murderous teeth. The beast within still yearned for the promised hunt, the kill. It wanted blood.

I snapped my head in the direction of the scream that had interrupted my hunt. I sniffed the air and then had my legs propelling me forward as the beast took over and cut through the forest growth like a knife. Nothing seemed able to stop it, I felt like I'd completely lost myself to the beast and it felt good.

I pressed back against the large oak tree, using it as support as I was shaking uncontrollably. They were closing in and their blood covered muzzles made me scream louder. It was no use though; I was all alone. What had I been thinking, ditching the guide and exploring the forest all alone? I let my body slide down the tree as I prepared my self for an unwanted death. I shut my eyes tight unable to watch my demise. That's when I heard something come crashing through the trees to my right.

I opened my eyes, looked to my right and saw a large pitch black wolf with glowing fierce sliver eyes.  It had a powerfully radiance that made me shrink back. I heard a low whimpering sound and turned to face the two wolves -that had just been advancing menacingly towards me- slinking back away from the large black wolf anxiously.

The black wolf stalked towards them and snapped his teeth together letting a low ominous growl sound through the air. The wolves were off, running like maniacs, jumping over each other in a frenzy of fear and fur.

I gulped terrified of what this wolf -that had been as spine-chilling as to scare off two wolves- would do to me. It slowly turned its head around in a disgruntled way and stared me down gruesomely. Its sliver eyes came to a stop as they met my green ones; I suddenly froze.

I felt exposed from the flesh right down to my soul. In that moment as we regarded each other it seemed more man than beast and I unconsciously reached my hand out to the wild animal that could easily rip my throat open. What confused me the most was the action seemed so familiar and I wasn't afraid.

Those eyes; so familiar, could it be? I recoiled back as she reached towards me. I slowly felt the beast retreating. No!! this couldn't be. She couldn't be the one; not again. The gesture was so familiar but it shouldn't have been. She should have been afraid.

I let out a daunting growl yet still she reached towards me -didn't even flinch. I unnervingly moved closer to the human. That's when I remembered what had happened last time I had gotten too close.

---

Her green eyes so welcoming I just wanted to dive in. Seeing them light up with glee as I changed before her eyes, from wolf to man; finally telling her, saying I love you. I promised never to let her go. My world, my love, my mate; but human. I couldn't stay with her, but my love was too strong to let her go. I'd been greedy changing her, hoping we could run together, forever and always together. You had to be born into the pack though.

The loss, the pain of losing my love, I couldn't bear losing her to age.

I'd lost her to more than that though; I'd lost her to abomination. An alpha mating with one as lowly as a human; it was un-heard of. The pack didn't understand. Those I'd mistaken for family had lured me away -using the beast- to hunt. I'd left her, alone and unprotected.

Coming back after the hunt, knowing she'd be waiting I loped along happily.

The beast smelled it before I saw it; the blood, her.  I found myself before her bare human body. I found her decapitated. They'd done this to her. I could never forgive them; forgive myself. I'd never let it happen again.

Not in my immortal life time.

---

I backtracked then, tripping over my hind legs. With one look in her embracing emerald eyes I knew I didn't want to end this. I didn't think I had the will power, but remembering seeing those bright eyes dull, I took off. Running away, keeping her safe.

With one last glance -its sliver eyes unnaturally boring lovingly into my soul- it made a human like decision and moved away from my reaching hand after a moment. It took off in a blur of black; my eyes trailing after it. I was left kneeling there on the moist forest floor with my hand outstretched. The wind blew my brown hair into my face covering the tears streaming down my face.

I brought my hand to my chest and tilted my head down to look at it. I didn't understand the ache I felt in the pit of my chest. Couldn't fathom its presence, but the gleaming sliver eyes that had just fled from me seemed to be the cause of my obliterating pain.

I watched -concealed by the forest- protectively as she shed tears for what had happened in another life time. The wind blew her smell in my direction and as it engulfed me, I took a step towards her. The trees around me rustled and her head snapped up into my direction.

Looking into those incandescent eyes I knew I couldn't end their glow -even for my own happiness. Even if it meant I'd been alone for the rest of my immortal life, I'd live it watching her, knowing that she was out of harms way; though out of my life, I knew she'd stay safe.

She returned to the oak tree everyday, and for hours I'd keep my self concealed, watching her, making sure she lived.
